Understanding Physical Anthropology and Archaeology
Published in Paperback by Wadsworth Publishing (10 July, 1998)
Authors: William Turnbaugh, Robert Jurmain, Harry Nelson, and Lynn Kilgore
Average review score:

This is an excellent Anthropology resource!
I had to use this textbook for a college anthropology class recently. I found that reading the book every night was actually enjoyable--it has an incredibly easy reading-style! Also, the authors are very careful to offer numerous opinions on most subjects so that the reader can draw their own informed opinions. I think this book is excellent for anyone interested in learning about anthropology or archaeology for the first time. Enjoy!

Understanding: Eliminating Stress and Finding Serenity in Life and Relationships
Published in Paperback by Prima Publishing (August, 1988)
Authors: Jane Nelsen, Jane Nelson, and Bookman Productions
Average review score:

The most dog-eared book in my self-help library
Of the hundreds of self-help books I have bought, this is the only one that I have read several times. It completely changed how I saw situations and people, which in turn changed how I felt about them. The principle of Thinking as a Function explains how a person reacts to programmed thought systems. The principle of Separate Realities explains how a person can interpret or filter their world. It is mostly a how-to book, though not step by step, with anecdotes thrown in.

This book isn't about positive thinking (which is just another programmed thought system, according to the author). It's also more than reframing situations; it teaches you how to get to an 'understanding' where you really do see things differently.

Some thoughts and detours the author discusses which keep us from peace of mind: insecurity, judgments, stereotyping, judgments from others, living for or against someone else, proving ourselves, working on self-esteem, anger, and the past. Ultimately, this is a book about creating close relationships with others and sanity with yourself.

United States History to 1877
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (September, 1983)
Author: Nelson, Klose
Average review score:

Excellent Help!
This book takes a thorough, yet quick look at United States History. It starts out with the exploration of Europeans in the Americas, highlighting the first encounters with the Europeans and Indians. It discusses all major (and not so important) events for the reader. Its ninteen chapters ends with the Reconstruction Period. This book seems to be more of a resource for a research paper than a novel, but I was able to read it like a book by Dickens. It taught me things I didn't know and helped me to pass my History courses with A's. This book is great for educators and students alike. I really recommend this resource to all!

The View from Vesuvius: Italian Culture and the Southern Question
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (June, 2002)
Author: Nelson Moe
Average review score:

The View from Vesuvius
I expected The View from Vesuvius to be an informative, scholarly examination of the "southern question", but I was not prepared for it to be compelling and intriguingly relevant as well. I can't wait to be an engagingly well informed authority on this subject when I nexgt visit my Italian relatives in Tuscany!

A Wake for the Living (Southern Classics Series)
Published in Paperback by J S Sanders & Co (September, 1992)
Authors: Andrew Nelson Lytle and Madison Smartt Bell
Average review score:

very good book
Some of Mr. Lytle's prose can be almost too thick--The Velvet Horn. But his short stories in Alchemy are very good, well crafted but still juicy. The bio on Forrest is good also, its beginning as artistic a rendering of a portrait as I have ever read, quite unique. But in A Wake for the Living, he shows--I think to some extent like Hemingway in A Movable Feast--that he writes extremely well about nonfiction that is intimate. I would recommend his short stories in Alchemey and also this book as good first ones of Lytle to start-out with.

The Weekend Woodworker: 101 Easy-To-Build Projects
Published in Hardcover by Rodale Press (July, 1990)
Author: John A. Nelson
Average review score:

Excellent variety of easy to build projects.
I've built several projects from this book and found the instructions accurate, easy to follow and they always resulted in a fine product. One project called "The Duck Basket", a great planter for potted plants, was so popular with my family that I've made over 15 for birthdays, Christmas and house warming presents. It's an excellent book and I highly recommend it.
